Baby Nixxon

This is a very special handlettered baby name painting. It wasn't on my commission list, but a gift for a little guy who is has been diagnosed with a very rare neuromuscular disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). SMA is is an inherited condition that causes nerve cells in the lower part of the brain and spinal cord to break down and die. When this happens, the brain stops sending signals to the body's muscles. Babies with SMA can have difficulty crawling, walking, or even breathing. Among other things, SMA makes muscles weak and leaves babies really susceptible to pneumonia.

Nixxon is the nephew of a good friend of ours. His parents recieved this devistating news about their son in August and have been living out of Sick Kids hospital while Nixxon struggles with this disease coupled with a fight against pneumonia in both lungs.

I wanted to do something for Nixxon's parents as they have a hard road ahead of them. They have had to make very difficult decisions for the health of their son. Nixxon is fighting fierce at Sick Kids and is continuing to make positive strides everyday. Unfortunately, there is no cure for SMA but there have been advancements in treating the disease to help kids live more active, engaged lives despite the limitations their muscles have enforced on them.

I usually like to paint baby names with nature or animals as I feel like they can represent childhood in a non-traditional way - without pastels or cutesy themes that will be outgrown. Nixxon's parents are both fans of the Toronto Blue Jays, so I figured a blue jay would be right at home in their space.

Fall is clipping right along now so I'm trying to get the most out our unseasonably warm autumn. Right now that looks like going for hikes with Aaron through Provincial Parks in our area, drinking lots of tea on the deck with a blanket and sitting around a ceramic table-top fire just enjoying the season.

Thanks for reading!
